Liposuction in Tucson, AZ

Liposuction is the surgical method of ridding your body of unwanted fat and restoring a slimmer, more toned body contour.

Stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise can be frustrating, and localized fat can create a disproportionate body contour. Common areas of fat accumulation include the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, back, and buttocks. Liposuction is the surgical method of ridding your body of this unwanted fat and restoring a slimmer, more toned body contour. Also known as liposculpture, liposuction techniques now focus on balancing the removal of fat with the fat left behind for natural-looking, sculpted results and a beautiful body shape.

What Are the Benefits of Liposuction?

Liposuction may be right for you if...

  • You have fat that is resistant to diet and exercise

  • You have minimal excess skin and good skin elasticity

  • Stubborn fat prevents you from feeling confident in your body

What Are My Liposuction Treatment Options?

  • Utilizes small incision sites to minimize scarring

  • A cannula (thin, hollow tube) is attached to a device that suctions out fat

  • Depending on the number of areas being treated and the amount of liposculpting being performed, general or local anesthesia (tumescent technique) may be used

  • Minimal associated bleeding and bruising

  • Uses a low-level laser to facilitate easier fat removal

  • Minimizes swelling and bruising by causing less damage to the surrounding tissues

  • Helps prevent pain

  • Fat harvested through liposuction may be used to add volume and rejuvenate certain areas of the body, including the breasts, buttocks, lips, and cheeks

  • A gentle liposuction technique is used to ensure the highest volume of viable fat for transfer

  • Using fat for augmentation or enhancement helps achieve natural, subtle results

Frequently Asked Questions

The recovery process is different for every patient and partially depends on how much fat is removed. On average, the liposuction recovery period lasts 10 days.
Immediately following your surgery, you will likely experience some minor swelling and bruising. Laser-assisted liposuction helps minimize the amount of swelling and bruising. You should avoid strenuous physical activity for the first week and only resume your work regimen with doctor approval. Make sure you take plenty of walks to prevent the formation of blood clots and to reduce swelling.
The use of a local anesthetic keeps liposuction from being painful. However, some patients find the tugging of the cannula creates minor discomfort. Utilizing laser-assisted liposuction will also reduce pain.
Liposuction permanently removes fat to restore a toned, firm contour. To maintain your results, follow a healthy diet and exercise plan. Weight gain can cause new fat deposits to form.
Dr. Nelson, our skilled and knowledgeable plastic surgeon, is experienced in performing multiple procedures to help his patients realize their aesthetic goals.

Some examples of surgeries commonly performed with liposuction include tummy tucks and breast lifts.

Other body contouring procedures can be combined with liposuction like butt lifts, thigh lifts, and lower body lifts. Consult with Dr. Nelson to develop a personalized plastic surgery plan tailored to your wishes, needs, and physical health.
Liposuction has evolved into a very flexible body contouring procedure that helps experienced surgeons deliver a wide range of desirable results. As we noted above, many patients seek liposuction to remove excess fat deposits in the buttocks, abdomen, outer thighs, hips, arms, and back.

Other common areas that benefit from liposuction include the chin, cheeks, male breasts, flanks, and the back of the neck.

Some individuals also come in for liposuction on their ankles, knees, upper back, and inner thighs.
Patients must understand that liposuction is not a weight-loss method nor a treatment for obesity. This procedure reduces and removes limited, targeted areas of fat. It does not substantially reduce weight.

That said, liposuction can be extremely helpful to your weight-loss journey. It can effectively target problem areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. Combined with your weight loss efforts, liposuction can help deliver the contoured form you have worked so hard to achieve.
Scarring is not a typical concern in liposuction. However, you should be aware that there will be small incisions — typically less than one inch — near the liposuction areas for insertion of the cannula. Dr. Nelson carefully chooses where to insert the cannula so as not to be conspicuous. Some patients may experience slightly more prominent scarring if they have had previous issues with keloid scars.

Discuss these types of potential complications with your surgeon. Following all of Dr. Nelson’s post-surgical instructions are also vital in reducing scarring. So, wear your compression garments!
Always look for board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and check that the surgical facility is accredited for safety and premium patient care. Also, ask about the surgeon’s experience in performing liposuction.

While cost is an understandable criterion, be wary of specials or deals that sound "too good to be true" — they most likely are. Safety, experience, skill, and reputation must be part of the decision process. With more than a quarter-century of experience in this field, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Nelson is happy to answer your questions and address any concerns you may have.
