Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Surgery that reshapes the nose is called Rhinoplasty.  The three dimensional nature of the nose and its central place in the face, draws the eyes to it when we meet people.  For some, the nose is either too small or too large to be in balance with the facial contours.  Through a small incision at the base of the nose or incisions inside the nose, bone and cartilage can be tailored or grafts placed to create the desired contour.

If incisions are only inside the nose, the procedure is called a “closed rhinoplasty”.  A small incision hidden on the midline tissue of the nose (columella) carved inside the nose is an “open rhinoplasty”.  Open rhinoplasty can provide the greatest precision in contouring the nose.

The surgeon will also assess the balance of your chin with your nose.  On occasion, the nose appears large due to an under projecting chin and a chin implant or neck liposuction may help balance your facial contours.

While the primary recovery from a rhinoplasty is one week to ten days, the nose will continue to change slowly as swelling resolves over many months.  While no surgeon can guarantee an exact result to the patient, rhinoplasty is one setting where computer imaging can be very beneficial for the patient to explain their desires to the surgeon and for the surgeon to represent potential results.
