Tummy Tuck - Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty surgery is commonly referred to as the tummy tuck. While a tummy tuck involves a low incision on the abdomen to remove loose skin and give access to deeper abdominal support tissue (muscles and fascia), there is great variability in the extent of the procedure. Fairly slim Tucson AZ Tummy Tuck patients with only a bit of abdominal laxity may benefit from a mini tummy tuck and liposuction to local abdominal and flank deposits. Mini tummy tuck may include some suture tightening of the deep muscles especially if pregnancy has stretched those tissues. The belly button typically doesn’t need to be reattached in a mini tummy tuck. A standard abdominoplasty will have an incision nearly hip to hip, but it is kept low to hide under swim wear or underwear.

It’s been well recognized that there has been a great increase in obesity in the United States over the last several decades. Bariatric surgery (stomach stapling or bypass) similarly has had an exponential increase. Massive weight loss either by the patients own discipline or by surgical means leave the patient with a loose apron of skin that still limits fashion options and the self-esteem success of weight loss. The extended tummy tuck and total body lift type procedures best address the greater skin laxity and muscle laxity that comes following major weight loss. Weight should be stable for several months and typically these larger procedures are done at least one year following bariatric surgery. Extended tummy tucks and total body lifts have incisions going nearly or completely around the body to address posterior, lateral and anterior flank skin laxity. These larger abdominoplasty operations typically require an overnight stay. The use of the Erchonia® Laser postoperatively assists with pain management and recovery (see Erchonia® laser page). Patient satisfaction is very high following abdominoplasty surgery.
